"We don't need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly." - Anne Marie Bonneau
Sustainability is at the core of everything we do at Juni. It is imperative to us as a brand that we do our best to care for our planet and make responsible decisions. As manufacturers, we're no longer making small, personal choices, but bigger choices that have a much greater impact. Simply being alive means it's impossible not to use the earth's resources, so what are we doing to minimise this as much as possible at Juni?
The beauty industry is a major contributor to the world's waste problem, with plastic in particular being a serious concern. According to Zero Waste Week, 120 billion units of packaging are produced every year by the cosmetics industry. 900 million units of that packaging is used to produce lipsticks - most of which are housed in plastic.
A Plastic Planet, the anti-plastic campaign group, says that every piece of plastic ever made, unless it has been burned, still exists on our planet somewhere today – and will do for centuries to come. Shockingly, of the 6.3 billion tonnes of plastic waste produced since the 1950s, only 9% has ever been recycled – maybe once, rarely twice. Recycling simply delays the plastic’s journey to the bin and then to the incinerator, landfill or to our oceans.
This is the sort of information that we just couldn't ignore when we were developing our lipsticks. We investigated all sorts of options - from so-called biodegradable plastic to refillable options - but found that the only way to completely eradicate the use of plastic from our packaging was to innovate our own.
We collaborated with product designers to research, design and develop our iconic aluminium bullet. It took over two years to make but we couldn't be happier with our luxurious, 100% plastic-free, recyclable lipstick bullet. The octagonal shape, weightiness and bead blast finish really pay homage to aluminium - the 'green metal'.
Our zero waste ethos doesn't stop there. Our cartons and mailing boxes are FSC and PEFC certified and fully recyclable, and the inks used are vegetable based. Our stickers, including the ones used on the bases of our lipsticks, are also recyclable, and use non-toxic, water-based, biodegradable glue. Did you know that not all glues and inks used in packaging is vegan friendly?
We are continuously looking at ways to improve our sustainability ethos and lower our carbon footprint - but think we've done a pretty good job so far. To ensure full transparency we are registered with A Plastic Planet and The Vegan Society, so you can be confident that the claims we are making are 100% honest and verified by these amazing organisations.
